Double Cup Love Book Review

I read a book in five days! This is exciting because it been a long time since I’ve read a book in such a short amount of time. Double Cup Love by Eddie Huang was a book I couldn’t put down. It’s a memoir written by an American-born Chinese-Taiwanese and his journey to visiting the land of his ancestors. The book is raw and real and Huang doesn’t hold back on how he feels about having grown up with Immigrant parents; giving great detail and insight into his self-discovery as he journeys through China.

Huang has had many experiences and has come to discover truths about himself, family, and love. The story focuses a lot on his travels and on his relationship with a woman named Dena. He struggled with whether or not Dena could fully understand what it meant to him to be Chinese. Overall, the book was well written and cultural references were explained so that readers can understand. I wish more details were revealed about his romantic relationship...He proposed to Dena when she arrived in China but didn’t explain the reason why the relationship ended. He just gave it an honorable mention and ended the book. It was an intense moment of build up with a deflated end.

Some things I didn’t like about the book was the overuse of foul language and too many mentions of having had diarrhea while touring through Asia. He mentions his brother’s a lot in the book and I would be interested in their view of being Chinese-born Americans.

Double Cup is a term Huang uses to express how much love he has for China-Taiwan, his family, and at the time Dena. Double cup is meant to convey his most intense feelings for what's important in his life.

‘Lean’ is a slang term for a recreational drug that’s typically made with prescription-strength cough syrup containing codeine and promethazine, mixed with soft drinks such as Sprite, Mountain Dew, or Big Red, and sometimes with Jolly Rancher hard candy.  The concoction has a variety of nicknames, such as ‘syrup,’ ‘sizzurp,’ ‘barre,’ ‘purple drank’ (or simply ‘purp’), and ‘Texas Tea.’ As it’s typically consumed in double Styrofoam cups, it’s often alluded to by discussing ‘styrofoam cups’ or ‘double cups’ or simply ‘drank.’ (note from Clif - A double stacked cup not only helps to insulate the drink in the hot Texas summer, but it also is a silent way of announcing what is in your cup.
